Poor Business Model

Tink Labs shut down due to its unproven business model.

Tink Labs chased maximum valuation even before proving the model.
Tink Labs' original pitch was to enable hotel guests free usage of smartphones in hotels, as a solution to high international roaming charges while away from their home countries, but it was proven to be irrelevant as connectivity improved and roaming charges were cheap.
Its business model was to sell extra services and gather data on consumer preferences through using the phones.
At one point, Tink Labs expanded internationally and reached more than 80 countries, and installed phones in 600,000 hotel rooms.
However, the Financial Times stated that in 2017, Tink Labs fully revealed its financial status, and the loss in European division had increased by nearly three times to more than 9 million compared with 3.25 million last year.
In the end, Tink Labs shut down, due to its unproven business model, and their mismanagement of funds.

Overfunded

Tink Labs chased valuations before the business model was proven.

Tink Labs raised more than US$160 million (over HK$1.2 billion), from investors including Foxconn subsidiary FIH Mobile, Japan’s SoftBank, artificial intelligence expert and former Google executive Lee Kaifu, and Meitu Chairman Cai Wensheng.
Tink Lab has internally announced that it will close on August 1, following a massive retrenchment in recent weeks, several current and former employees told the Financial Times.
