- Draw Something had a hopeful beginning, in its first six weeks after its debut in February, the app had been downloaded 35 million times.
- In April, the app had become the most top paid app in iTunes stores, but after that things took a turn for the worse.
- The game’s number fell drastically and lost its seven million users from May to June alone.
- According to TechCrunch, the game was easy to quit guilt-free since without the emotional dynamic of winning and losing, the users become less invested in the game.
- Most people were less likely to purchase on Draw Something essential extras because it was unnecessary for users to spend on it.
- TechCrunch pointed out in its article, “if the Draw Something game mechanics don’t change, it’s current growth trajectory will be unsustainable.”
- And in late April, after its strong launch and being number one in Apple’s App Store for a week, Draw Something started to fizzle out and fell to number 33 by mid-May.
- Failed Acquisition (Takeover)
- Zynga acquired OMGPOP and its employee for $200 million, it had saved a struggling company that was burning $17M in funding in six years and was on the brink of bankruptcy.
- But after 17 months of Zynga purchase, Zynga has decided to shut OMGPOP division.
- OMGPOP’s Draw Something app was not successful as Zynga hoped it would be, which saw a rise in popularity and then dramatically fell within a few weeks after Zynga bought it.
- Zynga said in a statement, “Our goal at Zynga is to give players the opportunity to play the most fun and social games on the web. With this goal in mind, we have decided to close some OMGPOP games to make way for new and exciting gaming opportunities.”
