According to federal documents obtained by the Northern Colorado Business report, Abound Solar suffered with continued production problems and revenue shortfalls.
Abound Solar revenue shortfalls was due to the price of polysilicon plummeting, its panel was too expensive to compete with Chinese products.
Abound halted its production to focus on cutting costs after global oversupply and emerging competitors from Chinam made the price of solar panels fell by half.
Damien LaVera, an Energy Department spokesman, said in a statement on the agency’s website, “When the floor fell out on the price of solar panels, Abound’s product was no longer cost competitive.”

As Chinese manufacturers increased production and silicon costs fell, Abound struggled to scale itself in current market conditions.
Abound said in its statement, “Abound believes that, at scale, its USA made CdTe panel technology has the ability to achieve lower cost per watt than competing crystalline silicon technology made in China. However, aggressive pricing actions from chinese solar panel companies have made it very difficult for an early stage startup company like Abound to scale in current market conditions.”
